“Rep. Nicholas Langworthy’s (R-NY23) March 2, 2025 “Weekly Update”

Rep. Nicholas Langworthy, is a staunch supporter of President Donald Trump and a far-right MAGA Republican. He sends his constituents a “Weekly Update” nearly every Sunday night. They give Langworthy’s perspective on what he considers the most significant events of the past week.

His “Weekly Update” is unapologetically partisan. It often pushes the boundaries of the House of Representatives’ Communication Standards. However, since Langworthy is part of the party in power, he hasn’t faced any accountability for his violations.

Below, you’ll is the full content of his latest message.

Dear Joseph,

On Tuesday, the House of Representatives passed the budget resolution for fiscal year 2025. This resolution simply establishes a budgetary framework while instructing several House committees to find savings and make investments within their jurisdictions.

All week, Democrats have been spreading every lie under the sun to scare the public—from saying Republicans are going to cancel school lunch programs, that elderly people will be kicked out of nursing homes, to hospitals shutting down, this has been a massive politically-orchestrated scare tactic designed to try and stop President Trump’s success. President Trump has been very clear and so have I; we are going to protect Social Security and Medicare, as we have always done, and the only changes in Medicaid will be rooting out waste, fraud and abuse so that the program remains solvent for the people it was intended to help. It begs the question: why are Democrats so resistant to protecting these programs from waste and fraud? For too long, there has been no accountability for U.S. taxpayer’s hard-earned money and that has to stop.

To be clear: the vote on the budget resolution was a first procedural step, it did not grant a single policy change or specific program cut. It is now solely up to the committees of jurisdiction to find those specific savings during the reconciliation process that will be a collaborative effort between the House, Senate and White House.

Now that that’s cleared up, let’s talk about why we are in the situation to make cuts and what’s at stake. Our nation’s debt has reached a breaking point, and our deficit spending is completely out of control. Inflation and national debt are so high because Biden and his liberal administration went on an endless four-year spending spree.

This resolution HELPS hardworking Americans and puts our nation’s fiscal house back on the right track. It requires at least $1.5 trillion in mandatory savings over the next ten years. Seven House committees now have a deficit reduction quota it must reach to get to that $1.5 trillion number. With our current national debt at $36 trillion and rising, these reforms are a necessary first step. The resolution also provides $300 billion for border security and national defense, two areas that require serious investments to protect our safety and national security.

House Republicans are committed to delivering on President Trump’s agenda of secure borders and communities, energy independence, lower taxes, and making America competitive on a world stage. The American people gave us a mandate and this blueprint, now sent to House committees, is the first step to delivering on it. Our nation—and the hardworking people who pay the bills in this country—will be better off because of it.

Sincerely,

Rep. Nicholas A. Langworthy

Member of Congress

Langworthy Defends Possible GOP Budget Cuts Amid Rising Fears for Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid

This week, Langworthy focuses on the budget resolution passed by House Republicans. To clarify, all House Democrats voted against the resolution, and all but one Republican, Rep. Massie from Kentucky, voted for it.

So far in this Congress, Republicans have held their caucus together, with occasional defections like Massie’s. However, the true wildcard in the budget process is the House Freedom Caucus. They are a faction of far-right Republicans so fiscally conservative that they even expelled Marjorie Taylor Greene from their ranks. This group is firmly opposed to any budget that increases the federal deficit.

Push Back From Constituents

Langworthy must have heard an earful from his constituents during the recent recess. The tone of his update is clearly defensive.

He writes, “This resolution simply establishes a budgetary framework.” But the truth is that it’s much more than that. The Republicans have set the budget priorities. All that’s left is for them to fill in the numbers.

Langworthy’s vicious attacks on Democrats are meant to divert attention from the Republican budget and to address the huge number of constituent phone calls and emails he and his fellow House Republicans are getting each day. Its gotten so bad that the party has advised Republicans NOT to have Townhall meetings where their constituents become heated.

He writes, Democrats have been spreading every lie under the sun to scare the public—from saying Republicans are going to cancel school lunch programs, that elderly people will be kicked out of nursing homes, to hospitals shutting down.

He doesn’t actually say that school lunch programs won’t be canceled, or that elderly people won’t be kicked out of nursing homes, or that hospitals won’t shut down. He says that Democrats are scaring the public, raising the alarm. And they are, and they should. Once it’s happened, it will be too late.

Social Security Under Attack

Despite Langworthy’s efforts at smearing the Democrats, his constituents remain very worried about popular programs like Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid, especially since they are under continuing attack by Republican leaders Trump and Musk.

Seniors fear that their Social Security checks will stop coming or that their benefits will be cut. Justifiably so. Former Social Security head, Michael Astrue, warned this week that he believes Social Security payments could be interrupted.

Musk Called Social Security “the biggest Ponzi scheme of all time.

Social Security is not a Ponzi scheme. It is a highly efficient, well-functioning part of the social safety net supported by most Americans. One in five Americans receives Social Security.

Langworthy’s constituents are justifiably anxious about Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid programs. His dismissive tone does little to quell their fears. With the midterm elections on the horizon, these concerns will likely weigh heavily on voters.

This is the text of the "leaked' Republican budget options

The GOP / Heritage Foundation’s Project 2025 Agenda for Gutting the Federal Budget

A leaked GOP document, shown above, titled Spending Reform Options, lays out potential Republican budget cuts. They total $5.3 to $5.7 trillion.

While not all of these options will be enacted, many will. These ideas come from the Heritage Foundation’s Project 2025. The cuts target healthcare, which is a lifeline for average Americans.

There are $3.7 trillion in proposed cuts – more than half the total – from healthcare programs, including:

  • $899 billion in cuts to Medicare – “Repealing Major Biden Health Rules and Strengthening Medicare for Seniors.” (Note: “Strengthening” really means “Gutting.”)
  • $2.3 trillion in cuts to Medicaid, under the misleading claim of “Making Medicaid Work for the Most Vulnerable

These cuts will devastate healthcare services for those who need them the most. All in order to reduce spending that benefits 99% of Americans to give massive tax breaks to the top 1%. Robin Hood, but in reverse. Take from the poor to give to the rich.

Devastating Cuts to Veterans

It’s truly alarming to hear that the Veterans Administration (VA) is planning to fire 80,000 employees, including disabled veterans. This move, which represents about 15% of the VA workforce, is bound to have serious consequences, especially when it comes to the healthcare services provided to our veterans. The VA has long been burdened by issues like long wait times and underfunding, and now, firing such a significant portion of its staff raises major concerns about its ability to meet the needs of those who have served our country.

Just last fall, before the election, Republicans voted to increase the VA’s budget specifically to address these long wait times by hiring more personnel. So, to see the same party now seemingly disregarding the needs of veterans by endorsing mass layoffs feels incredibly hypocritical. Langworthy and his fellow Republicans have positioned themselves as champions of veterans, but this move—combined with their continued push for spending cuts to critical programs—suggests otherwise. It’s hard not to interpret this as a betrayal of those who have sacrificed so much for this country. At the very least, it seems that veterans are being used as political pawns while their basic needs are left hanging in the balance.

If these layoffs proceed, it’s difficult to imagine how the VA could continue to provide the quality care that our veterans deserve. It sends a troubling message: when it comes to making tough choices, it’s the most vulnerable—like veterans—that end up bearing the brunt of the consequences. So, yes, it’s fair to question whether Langworthy and other Republicans truly have the best interests of veterans in mind when they continue to back policies that put our heroes at risk of further neglect.

More Backlash

Langworthy is well aware of the backlash caused by these proposals. He’s hearing and seeing it from people throughout NY23. That’s why he won’t even have an in-person town hall meeting to face his voters. He’s afraid.

That’s why his ‘Weekly Update” is filled with attacks on Democrats. He’s trying to divert the public’s attention from the Project 2025 agenda.

The proposed cuts to Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid, as detailed in the “Spending Cut Options,” will hurt everyone.

If enacted, hospitals and health clinics will close, seniors will be pushed out of nursing homes, and children will go without school lunches. This is not fearmongering; it is a warning of what’s coming.

Langworthy’s Claim of a “Mandate”

Finally, Langworthy states, “The American people gave us [Republicans] a mandate…” Americans did not give Republicans a mandate.

  • While Trump won the Electoral College, he did not win a majority of the popular vote. Over 50% of voters cast ballots for someone other than Trump.
  • Trump’s margin of victory was just 1.5%, the fifth-smallest margin in the last 32 presidential elections.
  • Trump received four million fewer votes in 2024 than Biden received in 2020.
  • If just 115,000 voters switched votes from Trump to Harris in just three states –  Wisconsin, Michigan, and Pennsylvania – Harris would have won.
  • In the House, the Democrats gained seats. In the 118th Congress (2023–2025), Democrats held 212 seats; in the 119th Congress (2025–2027), they gained three seats, bringing their total to 215. However, it dropped to 214 seats just yesterday when Congressman Sylvester Turner of Texas died. Republicans hold just 218 seats.
  • A four-vote advantage in a chamber of 435 seats hardly constitutes a mandate, as Langworthy claims.

As Republicans continue to push their proposed budget cuts, Langworthy’s increasingly defensive tone in his Weekly Update means he is acutely aware of the growing backlash.

Finally

With rising concerns about impending cuts to Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid, Republicans face significant repercussions in the upcoming midterm elections. Massive cuts to the social safety net, and broken campaign promises – such as ending the Ukraine-Russia War, reducing grocery prices, and resolving the Southern border crisis – become central issues for voters.

The party out of power almost always gains seats during the midterm elections. House Republicans have little margin for error before they lose control of the House.
